Interval / Break Cards

In the early days of Channel Four (1982-83) there wasn't enough advertising eing sold to fill the break time.

This situation was worsened by an actors union dispute which prevented many advertisements from being screened on Channel Four and TV-am.

To fill the airtime, Channel Four transmitted an interval / break card over which the ITV regions could insert advertising (if any!) .

The cards could still occasionally be seen briefly as late as 1986 in some ITV regions so there are probably a few more examples of these slides on old home video tapes.

The early cards (some animated) featured a 'video feedback' effect as can be obtained by ponting a video camera at the monitor displaying the camera's output. An infinity mirror effect is created as in the first two examples shown here.

Generally the colouring followed those of the Channel Four logo.

Later interval cards featured the logo bouncing and flipping around the screen leaving fading trails of the logo behind.

Live action films

In 1984 a series of interval films were introduced which featured aerial views of London and views from train drivers cabs. The music used on these films was more contemporary. Details can be found on the London/Trains VT page.

Following shortly
More interval card slides will 'follow shortly' including some video footage of some animated examples.

Many thanks to those who have already provided video grabs and tape copies of this material.

If you have any video footage featuring any of the break/interval cards a copy would be greatly appreciated. Please Email
